Having telegraphed our giving up of Direct Tv I’m going to start posting the media that replaces it. First up on Google video Aaron Russo’s “America: from freedom to facism” You can find out a lot more here.

In short. People want to pay taxes. They want to do it so much that the gun to their head is a mere cursory detail. Most of you can’t see the fnords! let alone the gun;)

Lord of bore? Quick Review

Lord of War (Widescreen)

I’ll usually watch movies that have an opinion contrary to mine without too much fuss, unless it’s been telegraphed as being totally divorced from reality ( Michael Moore’s “bowling” comes to mind.) This one I was expecting not to be bored in, it’s guns, chases, explosives and .. maybe in a slow motion way it is. While the movie ultimately agrees that the “merchants of death” are nation states belonging to the security council ( oh there’s a shocker ) it totally fails for me in the last third. Fundamentally there’s
something missing in the logic when seeing a gang of men with machetes hack up a young woman and child means that not selling weapons to them was somehow adding insult to injury. There’s a sad and unavoidable fact larger numbers of people control those without the means to damage the larger group, some call it anarchy I prefer to think of it as the natural expression of situational democracy. If they really cared , arm the helpless. Oops I’m now beyond the pale of the humanist groups but seemingly they get off
on the idea that a dead women with her panties around her ankles in an alley is morally superior to one explaining to the cops why two guys have holes in them:) It’s easier to explain in pictures;)

This man does an excellent job,

Direct TV .. It’s over. It’s time to take out the trash and replace it with..

More trash:)

After noticing the Direct TV bill has climbed to $42 a month for 2-4 channels that we watch, and then only infrequently. A quick family meeting later ( ok a chat in the car) and the experiment will begin as soon as Dobh hits daycare ( we need the tv to pacify the sitter;) ) We’re buying a mac for the living room, one I’ve been trying to justify one forever and now , unlike the government, the funding has been secured. $42 a month gets you a damn nice mac. Netflix for movies, Ifilm for shorts and the myriad podcasts that reduce tv further into an unecessary expense. Local news? you think that exists ? Oh damn you are funny you need a podcast too..

Incommunicado – “Hal-tseese” and the day.

Well still suffering badly from a blocked tubes, an office with a climate that varies from Oahu to North Alabama in winter. I’ve often thought about returning to school, though the further time goes on the less likely (I taut I taw tautology) that’s going to occur. Problem is most institutions are not set up to cater to the customer. I’ve read enough classics thank you, I don’t wish to spend money on doing so, nor do I need to be taught that basic civility to other people is a useful too ( regardless of their deserving it;) or a myriad of other extras that they require prior to taking your cash. The flip side of course takes the money and lets you do the work.Basically paying for a certificate you can print out on a laser copier and learning on your own is somehow invalid, most people can’t gauge what you know and use an identified marker such as MA, BA, etc They’ll
also tell you they are not prejudiced. :)

There’s a sound engineering course I’d love to take but the time commitment makes it impossible to carry on a family, job and course that requires a lot of dedication. ( other’s claim to manage such but somethings got to give)

And the title? Well a friend ( she’s not stabbed me and occasionally smiles in my direction so yeah considered a friend) says that I speak in “hal-tseese” a grammar that is impenetrable to the average American and which I am becoming more and more inclined to agree with.

So interesting things found on the web today .

Res Ipsa loquitor.  Or does it?    after chatting with a friend that equates fear mongering on both sides to the same thing  which , on reflection, I’m going to disagree with them on.  MSNBC is not taking my money forcefully to redistribute to while requiring the family goes through interesting times just trying to get a passport for the kid.

Need Another Stupid Anchor? Exploring the space between Couric’s ears

News anchor wonders if the money from NASA buys us anything which as the commenters to their blog remind them of the benefits right under her nose.Firstly it’s nice that the comments are in place since they are harsher than you usually see talkback taking. I.e it’s not just name calling, though there are some really good ones,

The Bad Astronomer takes her down   with some choice phrases

Look, I know a lot of people don’t know this stuff. I know, too, that NASA could do a better job of talking about this kind of stuff. I also know Ms. Couric is not a journalist, but c’mon, she plays one on TV. It’s simplicity itself to actually, y’know, do some research.

Love it.   People make their voting choices based on these talking heads, I tell you we’re scroomed

Poll: 74 percent of Americans say Congress out of touch – CNN.com

, a new poll says nearly three quarters of Americans see Congress as out of touch, much as they did in 1994, the last time the minority party took control of Capitol Hill.

It’s wrong to castigate the elected officials when  for years poll after poll shows people that tank their  senator( if they know who they are, and what state they live in;) )  yet incumbents win the vast majority of the time.  With such a cognitive dissonance I’m thinking that we need the Patrician from Ankh Morpork to take over. A fantasy solution  for a public ill grounded in reality .   It’s going back to the Discordian sermon on ethics and love.

One day Mal-2 asked the messenger spirit Saint Gulik to approach the
Goddess and request Her presence for some desperate advice. Shortly afterwards
the radio came on by itself, and an ethereal female Voice said YES?

“O! Eris! Blessed Mother of Man! Queen of Chaos! Daughter of Discord!
Concubine of Confusion! O! Exquisite Lady, I beseech You to lift a heavy burden
from my heart!”

WHAT BOTHERS YOU, MAL? YOU DON’T SOUND WELL.

“I am filled with fear and tormented with terrible visions of pain.
Everywhere people are hurting one another, the planet is rampant with
injustices, whole societies plunder groups of their own people, mothers
imprison sons, children perish while brothers war. O, woe.”

WHAT IS THE MATTER WITH THAT, IF IT IS WHAT YOU WANT TO DO?

“But nobody Wants it! Everybody hates it.”

OH. WELL, THEN STOP.

I’m feeling a little stranded here too.

Wow, do I feel icky.  I would be calling in sick if I hadn’t already arranged to work remotely.  The kind of day I’m having ?

Started off on the Charles Goyette show  where he was interviewing the  Mark Osterloh  who gathered more than 185,000 signatures to put his Arizona Voter Reward Act on the state ballot.

This man believes that bribing people to steal from us is a great thing.  I’m not a fan of democracy ( note I didn’t say rebublic and if you don’t get the difference I think we already hate each other) it’s mob rule with a filing cabinet and impractical for a nation the size of the USA.  As one caller pointed out   there’s loads of people wanting more people to vote but the same effort spent on ensuring that votes are valid , and reproducible , seems to be  of less import.   It’s a shame that non participation in the system is seen as apathy when for many of those I know it’s the result of a logical process.   Voting <> consent for the resulting decisions of the “majority” . Note just how stable the USA has been since the civil war,  power passes from  party to party  it’s like there’s  nothing that they fundamentally disagree on, nothing worth fighting for or holding on to,  why it’s like an elite conspiracy ;)

I think I need to make a Weimar o mometer to apply to the posts. Ie does the news of the day  feel like  early 30′s mid 30′s or  late 30′s Germany. You may recall  democracy really came through in that situation:P

Just how bad is the Scottish Education system?

Kinda worrying that LA and SF are seen as possessing the same kind of challenges of a Scottish school, WTF?   All they want is 30 pairs of eyes looking at one pair looking out while passing on the instructions to be a valuable , not to theirselves,  member of society.

High-achieving schools in America are to be toured by the first minister and chief inspector of schools to see if any lessons can be learned in Scotland.

The article goes on  re Scotland trying to attract Americans over  which I think I will relate a story , it’s not anecdotal  but I can’t find the exact  item in  the couple of minutes I’ve given to this just this one that’s from a tabloid paper.  The UK has one of , if not the highest  number of people that wish to be elsewhere from amongst OECD countries  (American’s the least likely)    Scot’s move , may come back  but the chance of a full  education ,career path  in most industries  can’t be done.

A lyric from Fish’s Album “Internal Exile”

Like our fathers before us,
We’ve eyes for America.
Dream of a new life on foreign shores.
But wherever we go, we’ll always know,
That the land we stand on, is never our own.

After Kelo more of you are going to find out what that’s like;)

Hail Eris,

One of the nice things about Discordianism is the flexibility afforded it’s “adherents” to create appropriate holidays on the fly.

“I hereby declare this day Habeas Corpus Remembrance Day, “produce the body for examination”, a Discordian Holy Day of Fondle and Gropage, where all Discordians should grab their Legislative Representatives by the goolies and cry out “Where’s my Bill of Rights, you bastard!“*.

U.N. slaps trade, travel sanctions on North Korea – CNN.com

The permanent headline is UN slaps … the Front page headline for the American  edition is..

U.N. smackdown on N. Korea

Great a cowboy president enforcing WWF diplomacy for a nation of might makes right “children”.. While  I’d like to  paraphrase Frank Zappa whose comments on the music journalist  and apply it to CNN I’m  heading to the kitchen to eat.

Counter intuitive.. Don’t cats need more crazy old ladies to keep them than men?  Maybe we have to ask what the parasite wants?

Zoom H4 recorder. Initial impressions.

Came home to a box from BSW. The Zoom H4 had arrived. I have read the manual once all that follows is an initial impression only. I saw the demo one at the Podcast Expo and had BSW send me one ( in exchange for cash and $20 off coupon ) Definetely a company I will be doing more business with.

Good: Pretty good stereo on the inbuilt mics when the compression is turned off. When it’s got the pop shield on and about 4 inches away it’s pretty damn good I’ll be carrying it to meetings over the coming weeks ( not at work so don’t worry) to see if I can use it as a back up to boards
The mounting bracket it comes with fits on a standard mike stand ( necessary .. it pics up handling noise like a motherforker. Runs on AA cells, no panic when the inbuilt battery dies
Access to monitor for record to recording falls naturally in the handheld grip for me.
price. $299 for a recorder, audio interface and an “effects” unit
Phantom power , drove my mikes no problem , preamps don’t seem too bad.

Bad: All the effects are noisy and you hear most of the phase type effects with no input , others you hear a heterodyne like whine ( no that’s not me)
Build quality around the memory card / battery flap.
Comes with 128mb card, I know the $299 is a damn good price to offer this at in relation to the competition but come on, add the cost of a reasonable size of recording time into the price and drop the effects 12 mins at CD quality , er thanks.

Clickwheel, not responsive, doesn’t seem to seat on center clicks all the time
no immediate access to gain controls other than gross hi/mid/lo the access to gain,
User interface is a pain, the 4 track section is certainly interesting though swapping effects in and out and configuring them per track, just ick. Maybe if the device can be remotely controlled by a pc this would rock.

Undecided. Not sure if it’s noisy in general or if it’s the headphone amp in particular going to transfer it to pc and have a listen over the monitors , turning on the compresser is it’s excuse to ramp
Turning on the compresser ramps up the noise level, doesn’t seem configurable in two track mode ( this may be ignorance on my behalf and I’m going to look at it

More , and possibly sound samples as I play with it.

Bathroom sink, removal, resurface cabinets and then add new sink , faucet and plumbing I’m doing the wetwork and looking after the kid ( hard to tell the difference) Erin’s cutting up the countertop. So some quality time with putty, sealant and teflon tape beckons.

Still very tired, had a break through moment with my mic last night  and one that’s not due to cleverness of any kind, let’s just say that nearly all mics that are non omnidirectional have a small symbol showing you which way is forward .. and here was I getting ready to put a bullet in the mixer.  Essentially it wasback to front..  er   Silly
