A lib “otter” ian view from Phoenix,Arizona

Hit-and-run victim left in street without help "claimed" - CNN.com

Read the whole thing.  Even  with the later facts that came in CNN  keeps a misleading headline and it seems that cursory scan would leave you with a massively different view if you hit  para 4 that negates much of story.

As to the Police chief a little reading on group psychology e.g  the bystander effect
,something he SHOULD  be aware of ,would  have prevented  a statement that is rather unfortunate.Consider how much of policing in a large city relies on knowledge of groups  and human nature  and  to have your head protector denounce you all as immoral.  Nice going, real nice.

capital city’s biggest newspaper blaring "SO INHUMANE" on the front page and the police chief lamenting: "We no longer have a moral compass."

"We have no regard for each other," said Chief

Or apparently for waiting till more facts come in.

In all fairness, most people do not know what to do in an emergency like that situation. Sometimes helping without knowledge adds to the injury. Take a first aid course so it you don’t find yourself in that situation.

What planet did you come from? There was nothing in that story that changed my mind. So people called 911 great for them. At least they did that. But did even one person stand by the man to keep anyone else from possibly hitting him as he laid on the ground? No. Did anyone attempt to sit by him until help arrived? No. I am glad that there was a camera on and that some of these heartless people are recognized by their co-workers, friends, family and neighbors. That whole situation makes me sick. Doesn’t anyone care about anyone anymore? For God’s sake he was a 78 year old man! Shameful.

I read the whole article and I don’t see your point. Calling 911 is one thing but it isn’t providing immediate assistance. This guy was hit and lying there bleeding and nobody even went over to the guy and talked to him, or sat with him while waiting for professional help to arrive.

Sitting there and talking to the guy would have provided the unintentional side effect of helping prevent the man from going into shock. Granted, it doesn’t guarantee he won’t but keeping him lucid is a fantastic first step.

This wasn’t a case where everyone was frozen wondering what to do - people thought about helping then said “screw it” and left him.

Helping does not mean curing. I’m not a religious man, but for the love of God, I would hope you would have got down, held his hand, talked to him, reassure him that someone WAS indeed coming to give him medical attention. If you’re saying that you would have just stood their watching as he bled to death, then yes sir, your moral compass must be in the trash. Shame on you. Hopefully if you are ever in an accident, the people around you have more concern for their fellow human than you have for yours. Unbelievable. :o(

    One round up comment.

If the story matched the headlines and the Chief’s assertions that we’re all on a one way elevator to hell, going down then next day 4 calls, under a minute and attention soon there after. Image driven story and they didn’t want to lessen the effect for anyone glancing the story.

Donna got it closest and it looks like the time to act was much smaller than implied in the headlines. She also hit the nail on the head re first aid. It’s amazing that the school system doesn’t cover first aid for the most part. Frankly a respect for your fellow human should mean the basics of knowing what to do to in such cases but this country doesn’t teach such, why is that? Maybe we’re been taught call a number , all goes away .. other people’s problem . Under stress people revert to their training, most have none.

The point here I was attempting to make is that this isn’t a new thing, it’s not an indication of a declining state or absence of morality, but a property of group behavior. Not knowing what to do in a group is about the fastest way to shut t action down.

( though I would question the morality that running over old man, versus healthy man versus child with a sniffle enters into it )

Seemingly enough people cared to call for help. Sorry it wasn’t in a visually attractive way of a mad dash t a phone , crappy tv, but not as effective as a cell
    call.

    Todd,
Both my wife and I have crashed our bikes ( 15 years apart) in built up areas, one in the UK , one in the USA, and people stopped to assist so your non religious prayer has been answered retroactively. Have reciprocated re gunshot wound and one I’d rather not go into. The purpose of this is not the event as much as the coverage of the event and the reactions of those in it.

So any of you without 1st aid training that are so eager to feel morally superior take a look at your actions they are not backing up the words :)
